In Africa which has abundant mineral provinces like the Witwatersrand and BIC in South Africa, the copper belt in Zambia/DRC, the oil fields in Nigeria, the Tarkwa Basin in Ghana etc, exploitation of mineral resources has to be the key to development and growth. But we have been dependent on mining for decades now, and we are still plagued by poverty?
The mineral resource curse is rearing its head in many a mining community where our minerals are plundered and we are left with ghost towns, environmental disasters and …empty stomachs. We need better quality state/private institutions to manage the mineral resource sector for African countries, and much deviant political, social, legal, business and regulatory framework that promotes positive and sustainable growth.
